GAGARIN’S GHOST: Surface of the moon, photographed by Apollo 17, 16th December 1972.
Western Gagarin Crater, at 22°S 146°E on the lunar farside. Named for Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), the first human in space. Other Soviet cosmonauts are commemorated by craters surrounding the Mare Moscoviense (Sea Of Moscow, 27°N 148°E) including Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, and Vladimir Komarov, the first person to die as a result of space travel.
